How to Choose an Espresso Machine

A Complete Buying Guide (Australia 2026)

The average café coffee in Australia costs around $6. If you're buying two or three a day — for yourself, a partner, or a flatmate — you're spending $4,000–$6,500 a year on coffee you could be making at home, better, for a fraction of the cost.

This guide covers every home espresso machine in our range, explains what actually matters when choosing, and shows you exactly when your machine pays for itself.

The Payback Calculator

These figures assume $6 per coffee bought out and $0.50 per coffee made at home (beans, milk, maintenance). A household making 2–3 coffees per day saves $11–$16.50 every day.

Machine Price (from) Pays off in (2/day) Pays off in (3/day)

The takeaway: Even our most premium machine pays for itself in under 2 years for a two-coffee household — and in 18 months for three coffees a day. After that, you're saving $4,000–$6,500 every year.

Our Home Machine Range, Explained

Dr Coffee H1 — $1,315

Best for: first-time home baristas, small households, anyone who wants great coffee without a learning curve.

The H1 is unusual at this price: fully automatic extraction — grinds, doses, tamps, brews, and self-cleans — but paired with a real manual steam wand rather than an auto-frother. That single decision puts the milk quality well above other machines in this bracket. Six programmable drink profiles, a 240mm footprint, and rated for 20 cups a day.

Quick Mill Pop-Up PID — from $1,835

Best for: entry-level semi-automatic buyers who want proper espresso control without breaking $2,000.

A compact, well-specified machine that punches above its price. PID temperature control, adjustable pre-infusion, an integrated shot timer, and a silent pump — features you'd normally pay significantly more for. The 58mm portafilter means accessories are easy to source. Available in stainless ($1,835) or black ($1,995).

Quick Mill Rubino Blu — $2,650

Best for: enthusiasts stepping into heat-exchange espresso for the first time.

The entry point to the Rubino family. A 1.8L heat-exchange boiler with an E61 group head, full stainless steel body, and a 58mm commercial portafilter — at a price that makes it the most accessible proper HX machine in our range. Note: no hot water tap, and the water tank is accessed by removing a top tray. Simple, solid, and built to last.

Rocket Appartamento TCA — from $3,745

Best for: Appartamento fans who want precise temperature control and a refined design.

The next generation of the Appartamento. Adds proper temperature control, a newly designed portafilter, an expanded drip tray, standby energy-saving mode, and boiler pressure adjustment — significant practical upgrades over the OG. Available in five colour combinations across stainless and black frames with copper, black, or white circles. Stainless from $3,745; black from $3,895.

Quick Mill Rubino Plus Instant Stability — $3,900

Best for: precision home baristas who want PID control and faster heat-up on a heat-exchange machine.

A significant step up from the standard Rubino. Adds a dedicated PID on the brew group, OLED display, programmable pre-infusion, twin pressure gauges, and standby/eco modes. The actively heated brew group brings it to temperature in around 12 minutes and holds it with far greater consistency than a standard HX machine. Serious espresso, serious control.

Every machine above except the Dr Coffee H1 and the Quick Mill bundles requires a separate grinder. Don't underestimate this — a quality burr grinder makes a bigger difference to shot quality than most machine upgrades. Browse our grinder range and budget accordingly.
