Bugisu: A Single-Origin Legacy
On the misty slopes of Mt. Elgon, Bugisu coffee tells a story of resilience and pride. Named for the indigenous tribe and their historic fight for control during colonial times, the Bugisu Cooperative Union, formed in 1954, made “Bugisu” synonymous with Uganda’s finest coffee by the 1990s. Though cooperatives waned, the legacy endures through smallholder farmers and Kawacom’s Sipi Falls Coffee Project.
Grown on tiny plots along Mt. Elgon’s western slopes, this single-origin Bugisu is hand-processed with care—cherries pulped in small batches, fermented in buckets, and sun-dried on tarps or mesh screens. Kawacom’s buying offices across Kapchorwa, Bulambuli, and Kween ensure freshness and traceability, blending these beans into a bold, nuanced cup with notes of dark chocolate, berry, and spice.
