Most automatic coffee machines at this price make the milk for you, and that is exactly the problem. An automatic frother gives you hot bubbly milk, not textured microfoam, and it is the single biggest reason people find their bean-to-cup coffee disappointing after a few months.

The Dr Coffee H1 does the fiddly part automatically — grinds, doses, tamps, extracts and cleans itself — and then hands you a proper steam wand for the milk. You texture it yourself, in a jug, the way a café does. That combination is unusual at this money and it is why we stock this machine.

It is built for one or two people at home, or a small office. Dr Coffee rate it at 20 cups a day, with a 200g bean hopper, a 4-inch display and a separate hot water outlet for tea and long blacks. You can save six of your own drinks with your own settings, so everyone in the house gets their coffee the way they want it with one button.

Is a bean-to-cup machine right for you?

We sell manual espresso machines too, and we would rather you bought the right thing than the expensive thing. Here is the honest version.

Buy the H1 if you want good coffee without a learning curve, you are making a couple of drinks a day, you want an office machine that anyone can use, or you want a second machine somewhere convenient. The manual wand means your milk will be better than almost anything else automatic at this price.

Buy a manual machine instead if you want to chase the best possible shot. An integrated grinder and automatic brew unit cannot match a dedicated grinder feeding a 58mm group head — there is less control over dose, distribution and extraction, and that ceiling is real. Something like the Quick Mill Rubino Blu will out-perform any super-automatic in the cup, but it asks more of you and it costs more.

Come in and try both if you are unsure. It is a much easier decision with a coffee in your hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make latte art with it?
Yes, and that is the main reason to choose this machine over other automatics. It has a manual steam wand rather than an auto-frother, so you texture milk in a jug and pour it yourself. Your milk will only be as good as your technique, but the ceiling is much higher than any automatic frothing system.

How long until it is ready to steam?
Around a minute and twenty seconds from switching on, per independent testing. Considerably faster than any E61 machine.

Does it grind the beans?
Yes, it has a built-in adjustable grinder and grinds fresh for every cup. You can also use pre-ground coffee, which is useful for decaf without emptying the hopper.

How many people can it serve?
Dr Coffee advise 20 cups a day, with a maximum of 50 cups an hour in short bursts. That comfortably covers a household or a small office of a few people. For a busier site, talk to us about a larger machine.

Can it be plumbed into a water line?
No. It runs from a removable water tank, which you fill at the sink.

How much cleaning does it need?
Less than a manual machine. It rinses itself on start-up and shutdown, empties spent pucks into a dregs box you tip out, and has wash and descale cycles built in. The brew unit comes out for a proper clean, which we would recommend doing regularly. The steam wand needs wiping and purging after every use, same as any machine.

Will it make better coffee than my current machine?
That depends what you have. It will beat a pod machine or a cheap automatic comfortably. It will not beat a good grinder feeding a proper espresso machine — an integrated grinder and automatic brew unit give you less control over the shot, and that limit is real. What it will do is make consistently decent coffee with no skill and almost no effort.

A note on the warranty. The H1 carries a 1 year manufacturer warranty, which is shorter than the 2 year cover on the Italian machines we sell. We would rather tell you that up front than have you find out later. Your rights under Australian Consumer Law apply in addition to the manufacturer warranty regardless.
